Composite and PVC boards do not need sanding, staining or sealing, and they will not splinter underfoot or check and crack the way exposed timber does in this sun. What they do need is washing — they hold dirt and pollen like anything else outdoors, and in a humid climate a neglected composite deck grows the same green film everything else does. The honest pitch is far less maintenance rather than none, and anyone promising none has not lived through a North Louisiana August.

This gets missed constantly. Composite boards sit on a timber structure, so all the framing that decides a deck's life is exactly the same underneath: footing depth, joist spacing, flashing at the ledger, hardware rated for treated lumber. Putting premium boards on a poorly built frame buys a deck that looks new while the part holding it up rots quietly. If anything, the better surface makes the framing matter more, because you will keep the deck long enough for the frame to be tested.

Composite gets hotter underfoot than wood in direct sun, and darker boards get hotter than lighter ones. On a deck that catches full afternoon sun and gets used barefoot, that is a real consideration rather than a footnote. Some product lines handle it better than others. It is worth raising when you are choosing, because it is the sort of thing people notice in July and not in the showroom.

Composite costs more to buy and install than treated pine, and the case for it is what you do not spend afterwards in materials, weekends and eventual board replacement. Whether that trade works depends on how long you plan to keep the house and how you feel about the maintenance. Neither answer is wrong — they are different purchases, and it is worth being clear which one you are making.
